African Preschools Society is a Canadian registered charity. (BN85888 0149 RR0001)  Our mission is to build and maintain preschools in impoverished rural African villages as preschool facilities are not funded or included in the education system of the local governments. Because of prevailing poverty, children do not have access to books, toys, or playgrounds to stimulate the brain and improve the motor skills. Our preschools provide preschool education, nutrition and basic health care in a safe environment.  African Preschool Society works closely with the local community chiefs and council members to establish the needs of the community. Our policy is that the land must be donated by the local chief and where possible locals are hired for construction and maintenance of the school.  Local community involvement is the key to a successful project as it empowers the community. We aim to have our preschool have electricity, running water, flush toilets, kitchen with appliances, classrooms, playground equipment and a vegetable garden.

We are extremely proud of the fact that 100% of money raised goes directly the projects.

How It All Began

Husband and wife team of Marianne Schaubeck and John Johnston founded African Preschools Society. Marianne owns Reservations Africaa tour operator specializing in independent travel to Southern and East Africa. John Johnston is an entertainer better known as Johnny "Bagpipes" Johnston, a professional stand up comic for over 25 years, specializing in corporate functions. John has also had numerous specials on TV.

Travelling frequently to Africa, in 1998 they started delivering school supplies to a make shift preschool in Lillydale B., a rural community bordering Kruger National Park, South Africa. By 2001, they had committed to building a new preschool facility for the community. Fundraising began and on May 16, 2002, they opened the 10 room new preschool. In November 2004, African Preschools Society became a registered charity.
